About the Library.....

The Gale Library is the public library for the Town of Newton, NH.  The library was founded in 1892 and was set up in the Town Hall.  In 1908, the library was moved to an antique one-room school house, now located on Route 108 and known as the "Marion Hatch Building".  Since 1978, the library has occupied its present site, a former elementary school building.  A capital reserve fund was started in 1982 to save and plan for future alterations to the library building.

Mission.....

The Gale Library assembles, preserves and administers a collection of print and non-print materials of value and use to the community.  Library materials, services, resources, and programs provide access to ideas and information to support clients in their personal, cultural, educational, recreational and civic interests.  The library adheres to the principles of the American Library Association's Library of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement.

Using the Library....

The library offers books, magazines, VHS, DVDs, CDS, and other audiovisual materials.  Movies and CDs are lent for a one-week period.  All other materials circulate for three weeks.

Library registration is offered free of charge to Newton residents.  Residents of Kingston, NH may also register for a free library card, according to an agreement between the public libraries of Newton and Kingston.  Newton residents may also register for a library card at the Nicholas Memorial Library in Kingston.  Those registering for a library card must show proof of residency.  Library cards must be presented for all check-outs.

Computer workstations are available to the public for word processing and Internet use.  Internet use requires a registration, clear account and may be reserved for one-hour blocks of time.  Library materials can be searched using the online public access catalog.

Children's Services.....

Children and adults are invited to the library's weekly Story Hour, each Tuesday at 10:30 am.  Children can listen to stories and take part in crafts in the Youth Services Room.  Children's Services are located on the upper level of the library building.  In addition to the large Youth Room, a smaller Picture Book Room offers books for youngsters, toys, puppets, and a play area.  Special events for children and adults are planned throughout the year and are announced in newspapers and on the library events sign.
