Snow is gone and spring is here. There are ways that you can help:
1. Get your septic pumped out now. If you are not sure how often to pump your system, here is a little trick. Start out with the number 7. From that deduct the total amount of people that live in your home. The answer tells you in years, how often you need to pump your system.
2. Don’t seed or fertilize your lawn to the water’s edge.
3. Use only Environmentally friendly fertilizer. (this is very important) Fertilizers should be used sparingly and sweep up driveways, sidewalks, and gutters.
4. Don’t dump anything down storm drains, catch basins or in streams.
5. Vegetate bare spots in your yard. (this aids in preventing erosion).
6. Compost your yard waste.
7. Use least toxic pesticides, follow labels, and learn how to prevent pest problems.
8. Direct downspouts away from paved surfaces: consider a rain garden to capture runoff.
9. Take your car to the car wash instead of washing it in the driveway. (this is important)
10. Check your car for leaks and recycle your motor oil. (this is a big problem too. People that maintain there vehicle in their driveway, don’t realize how much oil and grease ends up being washed into our water as a result of heavy rains)
